On-Demand TMS vs. On-Premise Technology

Now is the time for Fortune 1000 shippers without world-class transportation management systems to take a serious look at the solutions presently available.  Where once enterprise or client server transportation management solutions were only capable of high volumes and complexity, On-Demand TMS may be their best alternative now. Mike Skinner, VP, ChemLogix Technologies, discusses the topic of On-Demand TMS vs. On-Premise Technology in his newly published article for Transport Technology Today at: http://www.chemlogix.com/pdf/Transport_Technology_Today_July%202009_On_Demand_TMS.pdf

Accessories Marketing, Inc. Renews Its Contract With Weber to Handle Distribution of Its Popular Slime® Products to Retailers Nationwide

SANTA FE SPRINGS, California – With many consumers looking to extend the life of their tires instead of buying new ones, Accessories Marketing’s Slime® products, designed to prevent flat tires for the bicycle, automotive, and motorcycle industries, continue to gain popularity through major retailers such as Wal-Mart. Weber Distribution, a leading third party logistics and supply chain management provider for 85 years, announced today that Accessories Marketing has renewed its contract for nationwide warehousing, retail compliance and distribution of their flat tire prevention and repair products.

The Slime® sealant products are manufactured at Accessories Marketing’s headquarters in Grover Beach, California and their tire care and flat tire prevention accessories are purchased from China. The products are sold by many popular retailers, including Wal-Mart, K-mart, The Home Depot, Pep Boys, Ace Hardware, Target, AutoZone, Lowes, True Value, Sports Authority, and Napa Auto Parts, to name a few.

From the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles, Weber’s in-house transportation division drays the containers to their 360,000 square foot Norwalk, California-based facility, located just 20 miles from the ports. Once at the facility, Weber’s staff performs a variety of value-added services, including inventory control through regular cycle counts, order processing, label creation, and ensuring retail compliance requirements are followed on each order that is shipped. Weber’s comprehensive Retail Compliance Program manages all of the major retailers’ specific routing, shipping and labeling requirements.

According to Jason F. Hackett, director of logistics for Accessories Marketing (Slime®), most 3PLs have a warehouse management system, but the difference with Weber is their Retail Compliance Program. “We grew from 6 SKUs with Wal-Mart in 2008 to 40 this year and Weber has helped us meet each of our retailers’ shipping needs. Weber’s Retail Compliance Program has been a vital part of our success. No other 3PL, that I am aware of, has created or maintains an in-house and up-to-date database of the retail market like Weber. They actively seek out compliance updates from both small and large retailers and everyone follows one set of instructions — from their floor associate to the shift supervisors to the customer service representative.”

Hackett also noted that Accessories Marketing is an ISO/TS certified company. “We are process driven so if there is a problem, Weber can quickly help us get to the root cause to prevent reoccurrence. The tenure of Weber’s employees is just as important as their knowledge of retail compliance. With the other 3PL we were using a few years ago the turnover was very high and we had to retrain their staff which led to errors. Weber values their employees and many of the people we work with have been there for more than 15 years.”

ChemLogix Expands BulkTainer Intermodal Operations

ChemLogix LLC has experienced a very successful year with its BulkTainer intermodal operations since acquiring the business from Union Pacific last April.  To support its growing business, the chemical logistics services provider has expanded its intermodal operations through the recent acquisition of  20 new ISO tank containers.  The intermodal tanks will be used for shipping bulk liquids long distances by integrating both truck and rail modes of transport.

“The combination of lower rates and the shift towards more environmentally friendly business practices is making intermodal transportation a more attractive alternative to over-the-road tank trucks,” states Stephen Hamilton, Managing Director, ChemLogix Global.  “In addition to offering customers access to state-of-the-art ISO tanks and equipment, our Transportation Management Group offers 75 years of combined experience, enabling us to provide best-in-class customer service and very competitive rates.”

Both lightweight and assembled with US fittings, the ISO tanks that ChemLogix deploys are built specifically for the North American market.  “Ease of use is critical in getting customers to move away from expensive long haul trucks to the more cost effective and green intermodal mode,” notes Hamilton. “We stress modal shifts to our customers to help save on transportation costs.”

A single intermodal train takes up to 280 trucks off our highways, reducing traffic congestion and pollution in the process, Hamilton adds.  “While our current clients realize the benefits of shipping via intermodal, the word is getting out to the few shippers that don’t already utilize this service.”
